Sampling of Community Policing ProjectsOperation C.A.R.E. Program: Concern/Awareness/Response/Effect Citizens who might need assistance due to age, health, recent surgeries, etc. and who are alone sometimes feel more at ease if they know someone will check on them. This program designates a time each week when a member of the Communications staff will call their home to ensure they are well. If no response is achieved after 3 calls, a police officer will be sent to the home. Operation Child ID: An envelope is given to parents for their child. The envelope contains a packet for the childs photo, DNA (strand of hair) and all pertinent information about the child. A data base was also created to compile this information, but that aspect of the program has not been utilized. Trespassing Program: Town businesses, condos etc, enroll in the program by way of an authorization letter. Once notarized the program allows town police officers to go onto their property to ascertain if a person belongs there. If not, the program allows the officer to request they leave, and if they do not they are subject to arrest. This enables the officer to make a decision without attempting to find the owner or the property manager. Home Inventory ID Program: At the owner’s request, the Community Policing Sergeant comes to his/her home and can videotape the owners’ property. This is especially effective for hurricane and insurance claims. The homeowners purchase the VHS tape. Home Security Survey: The Community Policing Sergeant trained by the Attorney General’s Office comes to the resident’s home at his/her request and conducts a security survey of the premises. Findings and suggestions are given to the home owner. Operation Chill: In cooperation with the 7-11 Corporation, Town Police Officers give coupons to area kids for a free Slurpee. Operation medic alert: Cards have been printed and given to residents. The cards list their medications, allergies, etc. along with contact and doctor’s names. These cards are placed on the refrigerator and in the resident’s automobile. Operation Club: In conjunction with the Palm Beach County Sheriffs office one time per year “The Club” is given to town residents at no charge. The club is a car theft deterrent device. Bicycle Registration: The residents either bring their bicycle or the Community Policing Sergeant goes to their home to register the serial number of the bicycle and affix a Town decal to it. In some cases if the bicycle is stolen it ends up in another jurisdictions evidence room with no way of knowing who the owner is. The Town seal advises the custodian they should call this agency. Child Safe Gun Locks: In cooperation with the Child Safety Council, gun locks are available. This year we received over 725 locks at no charge. Domestic violence and other needs: Used cell phones that have been donated and deactivated are given to those who need them. The phones still have the capability of dialing 911. Meetings: Each month a Community Policing meeting is held, different items are discussed and an overview of any problems are talked about. It is a forum to handle matters and address concerns. E-Mail Notification: Over 135 homes have given this agency their e-mail address. They are notified of any crime trends, potential problems and any upcoming events. Parades and other events: The program is often involved in other town events and is there to facilitate communications between the event planners and the police department.
